Energy, Chemistry and Society

This project is co-financed from the EEA Financial Mechanism, Norwegian Financial Mechanism and state budget of the Slovak Republic through NIL Fund Supporting Cooperation in the Field of Education.

For thousands of years man based his survival on the environment, which provided him with food, energy and the means to evolve. Energy has been one of the key building blocks of technical and economic development, and of social organisation. Patterns of energy use are a fingerprint of society, and of our impact on the environment. Energy resources and technologies shape cultures, economies, and international relations. We live in a unique era in the history of energy use and impact on society and on the planet. Energy issues require a new form of thinking and analysis. In the future, civilization will be forced to research and develop alternative energy sources. Our current rate of fossil fuel usage will lead to an energy crisis this century. In order to survive the energy crisis many companies in the energy industry are inventing new ways to extract energy from renewable sources. The main objective of this project is to help our students learn about their relationship with energy and investigate the environmental issues related to energy's role in society and thus increase the public awareness of energy in all its aspects. The first year of the project will focus on producing an e-learning course on energy issues. The e-learning course will contain ten lectures on different energy issues.

All communication takes place through the learning environment Blackboard/WebCT.
