Sustainable School
Successful sustainable schools are involved in many activities beyond the core curriculum, such as Healthy Schools, Global Dimension, Eco-schools, Growing Schools.
Sustainable Development was first defined in the Brundtland Commission Report (WCED, 1987):
"Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Sustainable School is a two years Multilateral Comenius Project of 7 schools from 7 different countries: Ralleio Pilot High School for Girls, Piraeus, Greece, Şcoala Gimnazială Mihai Eminescu, Craiova, Romania, Fatih İlköğretim Okulu, Istanbul, Turkey, Maxim Gorky Secondary School, Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, OŠ Ivana Cankarja, Vrhnika, Slovenia, Ies Profesor Antonio Cabrera Pérez, Telde, Canarias, Spain and Fjölbrautaskólinn við Ármúla, Reykjavík, Iceland.

The project aims to introduce the principles of sustainable development at school, which means shift the school towards stainability, through specific changes in the educational, social, organizational and environmental domains of school life. This shift is driven by the introduction of a set of Sustainable School Indicators (SSI).
The first meeting of the coordinators took place in Craiova, Romania, November 3rd-10th 2012 with a keynote presentation by Dimitris Kalaitzidis on "Sustainable School and Sustainable School Indicators" followed by 3 working session. The second meeting took place in Telde, Gran Canaria, February 4th-9th 2013. Click here for the programme and the protocol of the meeting. Four members of staff, Bryndís Valdsdóttir, Helmut Hinrichsen, Kristrún Sigurðardóttir og Ólafur H. Sigurjónsson, and four students of our school, Jóhann Már Berry, Jónína Riedel, Sólkatla Ólafsdóttir og Unnur Margrét Unnarsdóttir, attended the meeting.
The third meeting took place in Vrhnika, Slovenia, April 15th-21st 2013. Click here for the programme and the protocol of the meeting. Two members of staff attended the meeting, Eiríkur Brynjólfsson and Helmut Hinrichsen.
The fourth meeting took place in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, June 15th-20th 2013. No representatives of our school participated in the meeting. Click here for the protocol of the meeting.
The fifth meeting took place in Istanbul, Turkey, October 24th-31st 2013. From our school attended seven members of staff and four students the meeting. The school staff was represented by: Bryndís Valsdóttir, Helmut Hinrichsen, Ingibjörg Haraldsdóttir, Petra Bragadóttir, Sandra Þóroddsdóttir, Sumarliði Ingimarsson and Sæþór Ólafsson; stundent representatives were: Andrés Ívar Gunnarsson, Anna Lovísa Daníelsdóttir, Marly Gomes and Ögmundur Karvelsson.
The last two meetings are planned in Iceland April 3rd-9th 2014 and in Greece June 13th-19th 2014.
